Karishma Tanna: I am what I am because of Ekta Kapoor

Ever since Karishma Tanna’s first major big screen outing, Sanju, broke all box-office records, she is on cloud nine. Not just that both her ongoing TV shows are among the top 10 shows. “It’s such a great feeling and the fact that both are produced by Ekta Kapoor makes it even more special for me because I started my career with them.
I am what I am because of Ekta,” she gushes.

Karishma has mostly been seen on reality TV of late, and the actor admits that not taking up fiction drama shows has been a “conscious choice” her part. “I made an effort for four-five years not to come back to TV because though I always enjoyed this medium, I wasn’t really enjoying the content. So, I deliberately stayed away from it,” she says.

But her present shows, Karishma says, allowed her to play parts that challenged her. “These were bug shows and the content was also good. Also, nowadays, it’s no such thing that if you are doing TV, you can’t do films. In fact, TV people are really recognised now,” she says.

With both of these being supernatural shows, is she really done with family soaps? ““How much more of fictional drama and saas bahu sagas you could do? How much more emotions and twists and turns can you get on the show? If something new is being attempted, people are calling it regressive. But the TRPs are still rocking. Be it fantasy or supernatural, people love it, so, basically, we are giving them what they want. We are entertaining them and they are getting entertained,” quips the actor.

Asked if she is ready to take up more work on TV, Karishma negates the thought. “Honestly, I’m not really looking at that now. My current shows would run for another few more months and after that, I would focus on Bollywood. Right now, I am reading scripts but I’ve got no idea about when the shooting would start. Hopefully, I will sign something soon,” says the actor, who is also keen on exploring the digital medium.
