Ranil Wickremsinghe takes oath as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremsinghe was sworn in as Prime Minister today morning by President Maithripala Sirisena thus bringing an end to weeks-long political crisis in the country.

Wickremsinghe was removed as Prime Minister on October 26 and replaced by Mahinda Rajapaksa who resigned on Saturday after failing to garner majority in Parliament.

This is the fifth time Wickremsinghe has been sworn in as Prime minister which is a record in Sri Lanka.

The cabinet of ministers is expected to be sworn in tomorrow and a vote of account will be presented next week to meet expenditure for first two months of New Year.

President Sirisena had been critical of Wickremsinghe policies and had asserted that he will never reappoint him.

He prorogued paraliament and later dissolved it when Rajapaksa failed to muster the support of a majority in the House.

But the Supreme Court decision against his order of parliament dissolution, forced his hands.

The culmination of weeks long crisis has come as a major political victory for Wickremsinghe who emerged winner among the three key players.
