JPC report on Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 tabled in Lok Sabha
The report of the joint Parliamentary committee on the citizenship bill, 2016 has been tabled in Lok Sabha.
It is listed to be tabled in Rajya Sabha as well.The Bill amends the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship.
The Bill relaxes the 11 year requirement of residing in India, to just 6 years for the above migrants.The Bill also makes amendments to provisions related to Overseas Citizen of India cardholders.The Bill amends the Act to allow cancellation of OCI registration if the person has violated any law.
