Marathon to create awareness for voting right held in SAS Nagar

Srinu wins full marathon & Kalidas Hirave emerges champ in Half Marathon

The Punjab Sports Department, District Administration and Daily World today teamed up to organize an international standard chip-timed full Marathon here. This event comprised 42 Kilometre full Marathon, 21 KM (Half Marathon), 10 KM and 5 KM open fun runs. The theme of this event besides ethical voting was to inspire younger generation to enrol as voters. Mr. V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT, Chandigarh was the Chief Guest.

On this ocassion Mr. Badnore said that the run is an attempt to educate more people to cast their votes in the upcoming general elections. He also distributed the awards to winners.

The Governor termed it as a positive signal that around 60000 people participated in the Punjab Daily world marathon which was organised simultaneously in all 22 districts of the state. In Mohali alone more than 10000 people participated in different categories of the run. He also appreciated the decision of the state government and daily world newspaper to link this Marathon to the election commission’s I vote campaign.

A total of Rs 20.12 lakh worth prizes were given away to the winners of different runs.International marathon runners, especially from Kenya and Ethiopia won several prizes in different categories of the run.

The first and second run was flagged off by Additional Chief Secretary Sports Mr. Sanjay Kumar. The third Run was flagged off by DGP -cum- chairman Mr. Hardeep Dhillon.

The last 5 km run was flagged of by the Governor. On the occasion, the CEO of Daily World Mr. HS Gujral disclosed that in full marathon Srinu (42046) came first, while Mikiyan Yemata (42511) got second and Rashpal Singh (42068) third spot. On the other hand in female category Jyoti Gawate (42302) took first position, while Zinahwork Yeneth (42508) came on second spot and Brtukan Adeba (42509) grabbed third spot. He further said that Half Marathon was won by Kalidas Hirave (21210). Arjun Pradhan (21803) got second and Isaac Nduro (21882) third position.

Divulging more, Mr. Gujral said that in women category (Half Marathon) Coren Jebet Maiyo, Kiranjit Kaur and Jyoti Singh got first, second and third positions respectively. The runners who got first 3 positions in 10 Km fun run were Rohit Kumar, Vishnu Vir Singh and Dinesh Kumar respectively. In women category the first three positions were held by Arptia Singh, Nandini Gupta and Reenu respectively.

Mr. Manish Tiwari, Chief Editor Daily world said that the cultural and other activities have also been organised on the sidelines of this Marathon, which enthralled the audience. Other dignitaries who were present on the occasion were Mr. Sanjay Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (Sports), Mrs. Amrit Gill, Director Sports, Punjab, Mr. Hardeep Singh Dhillon, Chairman Punjab Police Housing Corporation, Mrs. Gurpreet Kaur Sapra Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Harcharan Singh Bhullar SSP, Mann Kaur (Renowned Runner), Brigadier Harcharan Singh, Baldev Singh, Rajinder Singh Senior, Ajit Singh, Balwinder Shammi (All Olympians), Gurbaksh Singh (Dronachariya Awardee), Randhir Singh Dhira (Arjuna Awardee), Dr. Senu Duggal Additional Director Information and Public Relations Department, Mr. Opinder Singh Lamba Additional Director, Mr. Ajit Kanwal Singh Deputy Director, Mr. Randeep Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Director and Mr. Kartar Singh Sehambi Assistant Director Sports.
