Supreme Court allows Karti to travel abroad on Rs 10-cr security

The Supreme Court today allowed Congress leader P Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram, who is facing a probe into the INX Media and Aircel Maxis cases, to travel abroad in May and June after depositing Rs 10 crore as security.

Karti is facing criminal cases being probed by the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI. Karti had moved the SC for permission to travel to the US, Germany and Spain for international tennis tournaments organised by ‘Totus Tennis Ltd’.

A Bench led by CJI Ranjan Gogoi allowed his plea as Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI and the ED, did not oppose it. It said the conditions imposed earlier on Karti for permitting him to travel abroad would remain the same and he will have to deposit Rs 10 crore as security with the SC Secretary General. On Karti’s behalf, senior advocate KV Vishwanathan said Rs 10 crore deposited by him earlier was lying with the registry.
