In the backdrop of poor showing of Left parties in the recent Lok Sabha elections and caught in BJP squeezing them for political space, the CPI on Monday softened its stand for one political party to power communist movement in the country.

The development is significant as the fruition of the idea would entail either merger or dissolution of the Left parties who would care to play ball.Responding to a specific question, CPI head Sitaram Yechury, while dwelling on the decisions of the three-day meeting of his party’s Central Committee, confirmed his talk with the CPI head Sudhakar Reddy in the matter.

“A time has come for re-unification of the communist movement and re-working of strategies and re-energizing of the activities,” said the CPI resolution.

“The re-unification does not mean merger. It mean all the Left parties should start working together and pave the way for emergence of one political party to power communist movement,” Reddy had said.

“The head of the CPI(M) and the CPI have talked in the matter,” Yechury said, added the Left leaders will further talk on the matter and to strengthen the Communist movement.

“The emergence of one party would happen but after the Left parties unite and work together,” Yechury said in response to a question if the CPI was receptive to the CPI’s initiative for it.

The CPI’s stand is that with a number of parties and their frontal organisations were fragmenting, the communist movement giving space for consolidation of right-wing politics.
