Additional District and Sessions Judge Sushil Kumar Garg has sentenced suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba bomb expert Abdul Karim, alias Tunda, to life imprisonment. A fine of Rs 1 lakh has also imposed on him. The case relates to two bomb blasts at different locations in Sonepat town on December 28, 1996.

Rajiv Kathpalia, prosecution counsel, said Tunda was sentenced to life imprisonment under Sections 307 and 120-B of the IPC and Sections 3 and 4 of the Explosive Act.

He said the convict pleaded for his lodging in the Dasna prison at Ghaziabad, stating he was being treated by doctors in that jail and there were eight other cases pending against him in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The court accepted his plea.

Tunda was also suspected to be involved in many other bomb blasts across the country. He was among the 20 terrorists that India had asked Pakistan to hand over post the 26/11 Mumbai attack.

After the Mumbai attack, he had reportedly gone to Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
