Sundar defends world title, secures 2020 Paralympics berth

Sundar Singh Gurjar overcame a shoulder injury to defend his World Para Athletics Championships title in the men’s F46 javelin throw event. Gurjar, along with bronze winner Ajeet Singh and fourth-placed Rinku, also secured a Tokyo Paralympic Games quota.

Gurjar was in second place after his fifth attempt before coming up with his season’s best effort of 61.22m to claim the top spot. Ajeet sent the spear to a distance of 59.46m to clinch the bronze.

The 23-year-old Gurjar became only the second Indian to clinch two World Championships medals. Devendra Jhajharia won gold and silver in 2013 and 2015, respectively. Yogesh Kathuniya then won silver in the men’s F56 discus throw event with a throw of 42.05m.
