Pak-born Austrian citizennoISI agent, claims wife

Jalandhar
Suspected ISI agent Ehsaan-ul-Haq’s wife Balwinder Kaur has claimed that her husband has been wrongly implicated as ISI agent by the Punjab Police. She said it was love that brought him to India.

Talking to The Tribune today, she claimed that though her husband, being an Austrian citizen, got Aadhaar and PAN cards made in India, he did not do so to plan any anti-national activity in India.

“Had he got any ill-intention, he would not have submitted his identity proofs like original photographs and Austrian passport for making the Aadhaar and the PAN cards,” said Balwinder.

She added that to hide his identity, her husband could have bought the property on her name, who is an Indian citizen. “Why should a spy walk into a government office and submit his forged identity proofs to buy a property?” asked Balwinder.

She claimed that it was not the Punjab Police or the intelligence agencies who got his identity proofs, but Ehsaan himself had submitted to them. “We gave them the proofs when they came to our home to inquire about my husband. My husband though was born in Pakistan but had taken Austrian citizenship in 2007. This does not mean that he an ISI spy,” she added.

Jalandhar Police Commissioner Praveen Sinha said it was too early to give him a clean chit. “If required, we may approach the Austrian government to verify his claims,” said Sinha.

Balwinder claimed that due to the “ISI tag”, her neighbours had stopped talking to her and newspaper hawker and milkman had stopped providing services at her home. Meanwhile, the police too did not seem to have established his ISI connection during the five-day police remand. Ehsaan will be produced in the court tomorrow at Jalandhar.
