AGRI VARSITY TO USE SOLAR ENERGY, SAVE Rs 70 LACS ANNUALLY

Ludhiana,
The Punjab Agricultural University has entered into an agreement with Azure Power Pvt Ltd for installation of 1 Mega watt roof top solar power plant under the net metering system. The system allows the excess solar power to be fed back into the electricity grid which can be used later. The project which will be completed by June falls under the RESCO model approved by the Govt. of India. Sanctioned by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, New Delhi, through SECI, New Delhi, it will use Solar photovoltaic cell for the production of electricity.

It entails zero investment by the university with a fixed tariff of Rs 3.32 for 25 years, which will result in cutting down of electricity expenditure by 24% resulting in annual savings of nearly 70 lacs.

Besides, it is a green technology that will help in developing an environment friendly campus by reducing the university’s carbon dioxide emission by 1460 tonnes per year and help decrease the overall carbon footprint. The Vice Chancellor, Dr B.S. Dhillon congratulated Dr V.S. Hans, PAU Estate Officer for taking the initiative of energy saving in the university.
