Debt-ridden Air India is expected to get additional funding of over Rs 2,000 soon with the government set to put forward the supplementary demands for grants for 2018-19, which would also help the airline run its affairs while paying off some dues to the lessors.

As per reports, Air India owes around Rs 1,800 crore to its vendors, including lessors and banks, which have demanded payment from it, after the government’s unsuccessful efforts to find a buyer for the national carrier.

The reports said three banks and two aircraft leasing firms have already served default notices on Air India over the past few weeks.

Demand for additional grants for the state-owned airline, which was to go under the hammer, would be part of the additional supplementary grants, which the Centre would seek from Parliament during the ongoing budget session.

The government had put May 31 as the last date for receiving bids for selling 76% stake in the airline, but did not receive any bid.
