The Bahujan Samaj Party leadership has asked the Union Government to bring an ordinance to annul the Supreme Court ruling which had “diluted” the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act.

“The Centre has the power to annul the apex court ruling by bringing an ordinance and it should do so in the larger interest of 35-crore members of the Dalit communities across the country,” said Dr Megh Raj, BSP leader and in charge of party affairs in Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh.

Addressing a news conference here on Saturday, Dr Megh Raj warned the BJP government not to target party workers in the name of police action against the agitators who had participated in the Bharat bandh on April 2.

In response to a query, the BSP leader said the party was making preparations to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha as well as Vidhan Sabha elections in the state, adding that alliance with regional parties could be forged.

Meanwhile, other leaders of the party present on the occasion indicated that the BSP could join hands with the INLD in the next elections to the Lok Sabha and the Vidhan Sabha.

The BSP and the INLD leaderships had held talks for forging an alliance in Haryana during the previous elections as well, but it could not materialised.
