Announces grant of Rs 11 lakh for Surjit Hockey Society

Reiterating the firm commitment of the Captain Amarinder Singh led state government to make Punjab drug free by promotion of sports, the Irrigation and Power Minster Punjab Rana Gurjeet Singh today said that Captain government would surely restore pristine glory of hockey in state.

Addressing the gathering during the final match of 34 Surjit Memorial Hockey tournament here today, the Minister bemoaned that despite being our national game, the hockey had lagged behind in sports arena. However, he said that the state government would make all out efforts to ensure that Hockey get its due place in the field of sports. Rana Gurjeet Singh said concerted efforts were being made by the Captain government to eradicate the curse of drugs by promoting sports especially the Hockey.

Announcing a grant of Rs 11 lakh from the Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, the Minister said that more resources would be pumped in to make sure that Hockey was revived in the state. He
said that every effort would be made to channelise the unbounded energy of youth in a positive manner especially in field of sports. Rana Gurjeet Singh said due to efforts being made by every Punjabi game of hockey was on path of revival.

Showering heaps of praise on the organisers of this mega event, the Minister said that they have upheld the legacy of great olympian Mr Surjit Singh alive. He said that the organisers have laid the foundation of a great movement aimed at revival of the national game. Rana Gurjeet Singh saluted the organisers for taking this historic initiative to keep the flame of Hockey alive.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Mr Varinder Kumar Sharma welcomed the Chief guest and other dignitaries. He also apprised the gathering about glorious past of Surjit Hockey.

Prominent amongst other present on the occasion included MLAs Mr Pargat Singh and Mr Sushil kumar Rinku, Congress leaders Mr Tejinder Singh Bittu and Hardev Singh Laddi, Commissioner Police Mr Praveen Kumar Sinha, Inspector General of Police Mr Arpit Shukla, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr Rajinder Singh and others.
