Amidst continuing political churning in Sri Lanka, Tamil National Alliance has said that draft of new constitution will be presented to parliament before 4 February this year.

TNA leader and former opposition leader R.A.Sampanthan told a delegation of European leaders that the draft Constitution which was prepared by a panel of experts and which was to be presented in Parliament on December 7 last year, will be presented before February 4.

Sampanthan pointed out that the new Constitution must ensure that the country is undivided and indivisible. He added that the new constitution must also ensure that there is a genuine power-sharing arrangement which allows the provincial governments to exercise powers that are connected to their day to day life.

The new constitution was a major plank of new government of President Maithripala Sirsena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe elected in 2015 in a bid to resolve the ethnic crisis.However, the progress on it has been very slow due to differences between various stakeholders.
