Facing defections and demolition, Naidu goes into damage control mode

Telugu Desam Party chief N. Chandrababu Naidu met senior party functionaries in a series of political review meetings on Tuesday, sources said a day after the current dispensation under Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy ordered a public meeting hall that forms part of his riverside house to be torn down because it was illegal.

These last few days have seen another major political development four former TDP Members of Parliament switched over to the Bharatiya Janata Party in what was a major setback to Naidu, whose party was a former ally of the saffron party until they fell more than a year ago.

Party sources said Monday’s meeting primarily centered on the defections, although Naidu, a former chief minister of the state who suffered a stunning defeat in assembly elections last month, did condemn the state government’s demolition orders.

The state government ordered ‘Praja Vedika’a public grievance hall that forms part of Naidu’s palatial residence on the banks of the river Krishna to be torn down because it was “illegally constructed”.

He also “strongly condemned” attack on TDP workers in Parkasam district and on a Dalit doctor in Narasaraopeta, sources said.Naidu’s TDP government built ‘Praja Vedika’ citing lack of proper government building for holding government programmes.
