Guv lauds SEWA centre for training women

Governor NN Vohra and Usha Vohra, First Lady, visited the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) centre in Kupwara today. The centre has been undertaking various initiatives for training and capacity-building of women in traditional crafts and thus, reviving traditional skills.
Reema Nanavaty, leader of the SEWA centre, and some of the senior staff, gave a brief introduction about the activities of the centre and said since its inception, the centre had succeeded in imparting skills in various crafts to over 7,000 women.
The Governor and the First Lady inaugurated a cutting and tailoring course and an apple supply chain tie-up with Coca Cola at the centre. They went around various facilities at the centre, interacted with the staff and trainees and lauded the deft craftsmanship of some of the women who were engaged in embroidery, handloom weaving, cutting and tailoring of garments, agro-food production and marketing of renewable energy products.
The Governor and the First Lady congratulated Nanavaty and her colleagues for their outstanding work. The Governor asked Khalid Jahangir, Deputy Commissioner, Kupwara, to allocate a suitable piece of land to the centre so that it could have its own premises and be able to enlarge its valuable activities. The Governor also announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh to the centre for advancing its activities. Shamsheer Hussain, SSP, Kupwara, was also present on the occasion.
