Kejriwal announces Rs 10 lakh for deceased sanitation workers

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of each of the three sanitation employees who died while cleaning a gutter in south Delhi on Sunday.

Kejriwal, who along with Water Minister Rajendra Gautam visited the family members of the deceased during the day, also promised a government job to one family member of the deceased sanitation workers.

Later speaking to reporters he said, “A financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh shall be given to the affected families. One family member of each of the victims would be given a government job.”

The Delhi Chief Minister also said that he has ordered a probe into the incident and added those guilty will not be spared and punished as per law.

The three sanitation workers died on Sunday after inhaling toxic gases while cleaning a sewer line in Lajpat Nagar near the Kabir Ram temple on Sunday.

“A high-powered committee will examine why such incidents were happening and required action would be taken to prevent such incidents,” said Kejriwal.

As per the government, no such contract was assigned to the private contractor who hired the three to clean the DJB sewer line.
