PAU IMPARTS TRAINING IN SUGARCANE PROCESSING

LUDHIANA,
A two-day training course on “Processing of Sugarcane to Jaggery” was jointly organized by the Directorate of Extension Education and the Department of Processing and Food Engineering, PAU, for the farmers and farm women. A total of 22 trainees participated in this training course. Lectures were delivered on processing of sugarcane to jaggery and quality determination, and hands-on-training was provided for vacuum packaging of jaggery for better storability. A field visit to a jaggery processing plant at Bargari (Faridkot) was also organized.

Dr A.K. Singh, Head, Department of Processing and Food Engineering, encouraged the farmers to set-up small units in villages to have access to quality alternatives to sugar.

The technical coordinators, Dr Mahesh Kumar and Dr Tarsem Chand, and the Course Coordinators, Dr T.S. Riar and Dr (Mrs) Rupinder Kaur also motivated the farmers to adopt this new venture. Participants lauded the efforts of PAU in organizing this need based training.
