Petition in SC to invalidate declaration of Presidential Election

In Sri Lanka, a petition was filed on Thursday before the Supreme Court to invalidate the declaration of Presidential Election scheduled for November 16.

The petition has been filed by the former Mayor of Galle on the basis that President Maithripala Sirisena term was for six years when he was elected to the post in January 2015.

The 19th amendment brought subsequently had reduced his term to five years but the petition has challenged the basis of that.

He has argued that holding the election would effectively reduce the President’s term to five years, which would go against the sovereignty of the people.

In another case, hearing in the court of appeal on the petition challenging citizenship of Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapksa, has been deferred till today.

The petitioners alleged that the citizenship certificate issued to Gotabaya Rajapaksa is not a valid document before the law.
