Rain looms large as India opt to bat against Australia in Kolkata ODI

India won the toss and elected to bat first at an Eden Gardens that hasn’t looked this sunny for most of the week. For the second time in this five-match series, India will bat first.

They will, of course, hope for a start that is different from the one they had in Chennai. Virat Kohli is keeping the faith in the boys that put India ahead in the series while Steve Smith said Australia have got Kane Richardson for James Faulkner and Ashton Agar replaced Adam Zampa, who was hit for three successive sixes by Hardik Pandya making it perhaps the turning point of the match.

Kohli said he wanted to make use of the wicket because the ball tends to do a lot more at night. “And of course we have two wrist spinners. So we would back our bowlers,” he said.

Kohli said, not for the first time, that the middle and the lower order’s performance in Chennai was really pleasing. “We take a lot of pride in how they perform. They don’t get too many chances but when they play like this, it boots the confidence of the side.”

Playing his 100th ODI, Steve Smith said the pitch looks good and they too would have batted first had he called correctly.
