Restrictions imposed in Srinagar to thwart separatist-called protest

Srinagar,
Normal life was affected in Kashmir today due to a separatist-called strike and protest. In parts of Srinagar, the authorities had imposed restrictions to prevent the protest.

The authorities had imposed restrictions under Section 144 of the CrPC on the Nowhatta, Rainawari, Khanyar, Safakadal and MR Gunj police station areas of the city. Restrictions were also imposed in the Maisuma and Kralkhud localities of Srinagar.

To maintain law and order in volatile areas, police and CRPF personnel were deployed in full riot gear.

The joint resistance leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik had called for the protest against the shifting of local detainees to jails outside the state, murder of separatist activist Nadeem Yousuf by unidentified gunmen in Budgam district recently and the deteriorating human rights situation in Kashmir.

In response to the call, shops and other business establishments in Srinagar city and other major towns of the Valley remained closed today. Though public transport was off the roads, private transport plied in uptown areas of the city.
