The central government said on Tuesday the population of all illegal Rohingya immigrants in the country was being identified and once that is done, they will be deported back to Myanmar.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh replying to questions in Lok Sabha said: “When we get information on the number of Rohingyas, we will approach the Ministry of External Affairs and connect with Myanmar to deport them”.

He said states have also been asked to carry out enumeration of such people and also collect their biometric details.

The BSF and the Assam Rifles guarding international borders have been sensitised to ensure that such illegal migrants do not enter the country. In February this year, Rajnath Singh said, a latest advisory has been sent to the states asking them to confine Rohingyas in one place and keep them under watch.

Responding to a series of supplementaries on the question, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said the central government has reports that some of the Rohingyas have been involved in illegal activities but he would refrain from getting into details. Rijiju also said Jammu and Kashmir had the largest Rohingya population. They are also in Hyderabad, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi.

“India has always been soft on those who have entered this country. Millions of refugees have been staying in this country. That does not mean anyone can walk into this nation and claim citizenship of this nation. We have created facilities for Rohingyas in Rakhine province,” Rijiju said.

Saugata Bose said India has a history of sheltering refugees and the government must do the same with the Rohingyas. Rijiju hit back saying he was saddened by the stand of Bose.
