Sri Lanka : Political crisis likely to last longer

In Sri Lanka, the political crisis is likely to last longer as the Supreme Court crucial hearing against the dissolution of Parliament will be held next week.

Multiple sources in the new government confirmed that a decision to resolve the crisis will have to wait for Supreme Court decision even as another motion will be brought in Parliament on Wednesday for change of government.

New Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has said there are no plans to back off from the government or resign and he will wait for the court decision.

A seven-judge bench is expected to rule by next weekend on President proclamation to dissolve parliament and hold early elections.

Meanwhile, another meeting of United National Front with President is likely to be held this evening.

The UNF has officially informed President Maithripala Sirisena that the party has unanimously nominated leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for the position of Prime Minister.

However, president has asserted several times that he will not appoint Mr. Wickremsinghe again.
