Sri Lanka’s former state minister arrested for statement on LTTE

In Sri Lanka, a former state minister was arrested Monday morning and later released on bail for making a controversial statement on LTTE , involved in decades long ethnic war.

Vijayakala Maheswaran was arrested by the Organized Crime Prevention Division of police on Monday when she appeared before them for making a statement. Later, she was produced before a court in Colombo where she was released on bail.

The Attorney General last month advised the police to take legal action against Maheswaran over her statement in which she called for the reorganization of LTTE in order to curb the rising crime in the North.

The parliamentarian from Jaffna resigned from her post of State Minister of Child Affairs on 5th July due to the criticism generated by her statement. LTTE was defeated after waging a three decades long war in Sri Lanka for setting up a separate Tamil Eelam nation.
