Student body polls in Haryana before Oct 15: Education minister

Gurugram
After a long wait of 22 years, the student body elections will be held in state’s higher education institutions in next two weeks. The declaration was made by education minister Ram Bilas Sharma who said the elections will be conducted before October 15 in all institutions established before 2016-17.

“We are delivering what we had promised. After over two decades of denial the state students will get their democratic rights back. They will themselves elect their representatives and from hence forth student issues will top priority of every government. The CM has given a go ahead and we will conclude the elections before
October 15 which will be conducted in accordance to recommendations of Lyngdoh Committee,” said Sharma.
Claiming it to be a big responsibility, Sharma said they would ensure peace and order during elections and have issued special instructions to police and district commissioners.

“I appeal to all student leaders to ensure maintenance of law and order and not break our trust. We have full faith that students leaders are responsible to be entrusted with power and thus appeal that they should fight elections fair and square and maintain law and order. The authorities have been issued all instructions regarding that,” added Sharma.

It was in in 1996 the student elections were banned by the then government led by CM Bansi Lal given the “unruly behaviour of some student political parties”.

The demand to lift the ban has been made by several student organisations for the last two decades.
