Giving traffic management a festive twist, the Gurugram police are dressing up as Ramlila characters to catch the violators on the city roads and sensitising them about traffic rules.

The initiative, in collaboration with the local Road Security officers, kicked off from Huda City Centre at 11.00 am on Thursday and proceeded towards Sethi Chowk, Mahavir Chowk, Genpact Chowk and other locations on the Golf Course Road. While ‘Ravana’ went ahead catching helmetless drivers and reminding them how he had nine spare heads while they just had one, ‘Lakshman’ was seen telling people how zebra crossings or red light lines were modern day ‘Lakshaman rekhas’, and disrespecting these could lead to death.

“Ignorance of traffic rules is the biggest evil today as it claims one life every four minutes. People are excited about burning Ravan as a mark of end of evil but do not care about evils like accidents which claim so much more lives. The innovative approach did make us reach out to many people,” said DCP, Traffic, Simardeep Singh.

The innovation did not end here. The Traffic Department even got a ‘Yamraj’ for drunken driving nakas who went around telling violators how mixing alcohol with driving was the shortest way to reach him.
