Training workshop on Detection of GMOs for officials of Bangladesh starts at PBTI, Mohali
S.A.S Nagar: 11 December : Punjab Biotechnology Incubator (PBTI), a component of Knowledge City Mohali, under Department of Science Technology and Environment, Govt of Punjab, is hosting 5 days Training Workshop on Detection of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in its state-of-the-art GMO detection facilities for the officials of Ministry of Environment & Forests and Scientists of Department of Environment , Govt of Bangladesh. The training workshop coordinated by Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MOEF&CC), Govt of India was inaugurated on 11th December 2017 by Dr T R Sharma, Executive Director, National Agri Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI), Mohali. The aim of the workshop is to strengthen the capabilities of developing countries in the area of GMO detection. It is a matter of pride for the state of Punjab that from Northern region PBTI is the only state laboratory notified as National Referral Laboratory (NRL) for detection of GMOs by Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare under Seeds Act 1966 and have been selected by MoEF&CC for conducting this training for international participants. The Chief Executive Officer, PBTI informed that the five days training which shall continue till 15th December 2017 shall focus on theoretical as well as practical aspects of various screening methods being used internationally for the detection of GMOs. These kinds of capacity building activities at cross country level are a step towards regional co-operation for SAARC countries.
