Universal I-cards for physically challenged soon: Union minister
Jhajjar,
The Union government will issue Universal Identity Cards to physically challenged persons across the nation so that they do not face inconvenience in other states. The move will not only encourage transparency, efficiency and ease of delivering government benefits to persons with disabilities but also ensure uniformity.
Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Krishan Pal Gurjar said this today while interacting with mediapersons after distributing free aids and appliances among 1,142 physically challenged persons during a mega camp organised here.
“The BJP government is determined to ensure welfare of physically challenged persons. Hence, 100 private and government buildings such as airports and railway stations in 50 cities across the country are being made disabled-friendly under the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan (Accessible India Campaign). Even 200 private hospitals have been empanelled for free treatment of hearing and speech impaired children belonging to poor families,” said the minister. Over 1,000 children in the country had so far availed of the benefit under the scheme, he added.
JHAJJAR: It was no less than a ‘dream come true-like situation’ for many visually-impaired persons when they received smartphones with talk back and accessibility features during the camp. In all, 108 such people were given smartphones and many of them belong to Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. “I am delighted to get the phone as I was not able to buy one due to my humble background. Now, I shall be able not only to interact with my friends but also to get vital information about my study through the internet,” said Bholu Sharma, a resident of Najafgarh (Delhi) and BA student.
