A complete shutdown was observed across Kashmir to protest the killing of four civilians during an anti-militancy operation in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

The call for the shutdown and protests was given by the joint resistance leadership of Kashmiri separatists.

Due to the shutdown, normal life was hit across the Valley. The J&K Government had imposed restrictions in the volatile old Srinagar and some other areas as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order. Heavy contingents of the police and the CRPF were deployed in city to thwart the protests.

A sit-in was held at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar, over the killings. The students of NIT staged a protest on the campus. They later dispersed peacefully. The shops and other businesses remained closed in almost all districts of the Valley. Reports said the attendance in government offices was affected due to the strike and restrictions. Very little transport plied on some city roads.

The government had also placed separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest and detained Yasin Malik.
