Mallya’s final hearing in London today; noose tightens around Choksi

Liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya will return to Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on Tuesday for closing arguments in his extradition trial and for the judge to set a timeline for a ruling in the case.

Mallya, who has been on bail on an extradition warrant since his arrest in April last year, is fighting extradition to India on charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to around Rs 9,000 crores.

The extradition trial, which opened at the London court on December 4 last year, is aimed at laying out a prima facie case of fraud against Mallya, who has been based in the UK since he left India in March 2016.

Economic fugitive Mehul Choksi too is facing the heat. The Indian High Commission in Antigua and Barbuda had asked the authorities there to stop billionaire diamond trader Mehul Choksi from travelling around the world.
