TRANSFORMS GARBAGE DUMP INTO AESTHETICALLY DESIGNED STREET

After spearheading a campaign to felicitate bright local girls by naming streets after them, the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Nakodar Ms. Amrit Singh has now chosen another challenge to give a clean look to filthy spots not by punishment or fine but by beautification of such spots.

Till a few days ago, the street outside the local Post Office in Nakodar gave a shabby look due to the garbage dumped by the people outside it. Though the practice was prevalent from last many years but as the locals brought this matter into the notice of 2014 batch IAS officer, she decided to accept the new challenge of transforming this place. Ms. Amrit Singh reigned in the local Nagar Council and started the project of transforming this stinking street into a neat, tidy and aesthetically designed one by planting new saplings, making arrangements for sitting of people and giving a new and vibrant look to the walls of the post office.

The impact of this idea-a brainchild of the officer was overwhelming as the street which till a few days back was a nightmare for people has now been transformed into one of the finest streets of Nakodar. Carrying forward her mission for a clean and green Nakodar, Ms. Singh also selected three places in village Haripur in Mehatpur block for the transformation. These spots were a Dharamshala, Temple and a Pond which were lying unattended and were demanding for care and cleanliness. Here Ms. Singh roped in the Rural Development and Panchayat Department to give a total facelift to these places.

Divulging the details of her mission clean and green Nakodar, the IAS officer said that first of all she identified the places of utmost public importance which were in state of neglect due to one reason or another. Ms. Singh further said that after identifying these spots she adopted three pronged strategy for revamping these places. She said that as per this strategy concerted efforts were made to clean, beautify and create these places as utility.

The SDM said that basic idea was to imbibe a spirit amongst the people that this was their own place and any kind of littering at this place would hurt their own feelings. She said that the basic idea was to sensitize the people that this place belongs to all of them due to which it was not fair to deface it. Ms. Singh said that the idea was primarily aimed at making the people realize that this society, city, state and country belongs to them and they were the real custodians of its cleanliness and beauty. “We have been successful in our initial endeavors and now under the guidance of our Deputy Commissioner Mr. Varinder Kumar Sharma our focus is to beautify more such places of public importance” she added.
