Bir Devinder thanks Akal Takht Jathedar stopping political conferences at Shahedi Jor Mel
Fatehgarh Sahib : Former Punjab Deputy Speaker Bir Devinder Singh on Thursday welcomed the Akal Takht Jathedar’s decision against holding political conferences at Shaheedi Jor Mel at Fatehgarh Sahib.
Bir Devinder had for long been spearheading campaign against holding such conferences on the solemn occasion commemorating the martyrdom of younger Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri, the mother of Guru Gobind Singh, the Tenth Guru of the Sikhs.
He maintained that mud-slinging at each other by leaders in their speeches at political conferences amounted to spoiling the profoundly solemn atmosphere of this purely religious occasion.
The intervention by the Akal Takht Jathedar and political parties cancelling their plan to hold conferences fulfilled the long pending demand of the Sikh sangat (congregation), he said.
“This development has initiated a new beginning that will help maintain sanctity of this Sikh religious occasion besides signifying a new, positive turn in the Sikh political life,” he said while acknowledging the support and contribution of the Sikh sangat and organizations in his campaign against political conferences on the occasion
